A dazzling ball of light for Maya Maria
For the recording of "Way Back," Maya Maria's latest track, we developed a custom white ball. The goal was clear: to create a dazzling white sphere of light.
In collaboration with Wander Andringa (Freelance Filmmaker) the ball was designed so that it could be illuminated from the inside. This created the intense, almost blindingly white effect you see in the clip.
Light as part of the story
Whereas a mirror ball catches and reflects light, this white ball does the opposite: it generates light on its own. Together, they create an interesting contrast between reflection and source.
This effect was further enhanced during post-production, resulting in images that feel almost surreal yet remain very pure. It fits the song’s atmosphere perfectly.
About Maya Maria
Maya Maria, originally from Terschelling, operates at the intersection of alternative R&B and art pop. In her work, she explores themes such as femininity, freedom, and the tension between the natural and the artificial.
After a period of enforced silence due to illness, her urge to create actually grew stronger. This evolution is evident in both her music and her visual choices. Her work is personal, multi-layered, and strongly visual in nature.
She has performed at festivals such as ESNS, Oerol, and Popronde, and is carving out a niche for herself within the Dutch music and art scene.
From idea to implementation
Wander and Maya Maria stopped by to see if we could technically bring their idea to life. Using a moon we had previously produced, we tested whether the desired effect was achievable.
Based on their specifications, we then developed a completely white sphere with space for a powerful light source, ensuring that it visually matched the intended result seamlessly.
A relatively simple subject that, with the right technique and composition, produces a striking image.
