A butterfly at The Gardens of Babylon
During The Gardens of Babylon at Thuishaven in Amsterdam, we recently created a unique installation: a large butterfly that came to life right in the middle of the crowd. It wasn’t a flashy object, but rather something that blended naturally into the festival’s atmosphere.
The combination of music, light, and movement made the butterfly feel different each time. During the day, it was calm and almost dreamlike, and later in the evening, it felt more present thanks to the interplay of light and the audience’s energy.
It works best when combined with music
During an MXGPU set, everything came together perfectly. The music set the rhythm for the surroundings, and the installation naturally became part of it. Ultimately, that’s what it’s all about for us: not just a standalone decoration, but something that truly becomes part of the experience.
Why this works at festivals and events
For festival organizers and creative teams, the added value of an installation often lies in a few simple things:
- It gives a place character without feeling forced
- People linger there and take photos and videos
- It helps create a unique atmosphere
- It makes a site more organized and recognizable
Good festival decorations don't necessarily have to be big or complicated, as long as they fit in with the overall theme.
From idea to implementation
We get involved in the planning of an event right from the start. Sometimes the concept is already clear, and sometimes it isn’t. Based on that, we design and build installations that are both practical and suited to the setting.
The butterfly at The Gardens of Babylon is a good example of this: a relatively understated design that gained its strength precisely because of its context.
