Safe handling of inflatable decoration during rain and wind

Wind sensitivity of inflatable objects

Inflatable decoration, due to its large surface area and lightweight construction, is susceptible to wind load. Especially during strong gusts of wind or storms, it can be dangerous if an object is not properly secured.

Therefore, each item is delivered by us with clear instructions and mounting options. We use:

  • Heavy concrete blocks or ballast

  • Truss structures, Layher systems or existing frames on site

  • Storm lines or anchor in the ground if possible

In some cases, we provide a wind load calculation along with it, based on the size of the object and the expected load in open terrain.

Important: We always recommend keeping an eye on KNMI and taking extra precautions at wind force 5 Beaufort (28-38 km/h) or higher.

What to do in high winds or storms?

  1. Check the anchoring

    • Check daily that all fasteners are secure.

    • Use only certified ballast and truss clamps.

  2. When in doubt, deflate the object

    • Our inflatables are designed to expand quickly, causing them to collapse and catch much less wind.

    • This is often the safest solution in wind force 6 or higher.

  3. Provide supervision

    • Make sure someone is responsible for monitoring the property and can take timely action.

  4. Use an on-site wind meter

    • This provides real-time insight and prevents surprise from local wind surges.

Rain or wet conditions

Our inflatable products come standard with a splash-proof coating and can easily withstand a shower. The fans we use can withstand light precipitation and are always safely shielded.

Please note that prolonged rain combined with wind can cause extra weight and instability. Therefore, ensure a flat, well-draining surface and avoid puddling around the blower.

Again as part of your playbook

We recommend that organizers include weather-related risks in the event's playbook as standard. Consider:

  • Wind or storm protocols

  • Emergency plan for rapid disassembly

  • Keep contact person from Deco Dudes on standby during set-up and take-down

In some cases, we even recommend a technical backup, such as extra ballast or a spare blower.
